Wednesday walk, one slothly step at a time!

Good morning Buzzers, what a beautiful morning it was for a walk! All be it, not quite Wednesday yet, but it will be soon! This moring I decided to take the dog on a trek up the hills, around to the next coastal town then back along the beach!

We got wrapped up, hat, jacket, gloves, well I did, the doggo looked at me impatiently waiting to go for his walk and we were off! A cold morning here around 0 celsius, but the sun was shining and as we walked it got pretty warm, I ended up removing the jacket and hoodie when we arrived at the beach end of the walk!

Today we smashed almost 6 miles! I forgot to set my watch when we left, so we did a little more than the 5.8 Miles recorded! (As you can see from the map above, there's a gap between our start point and end point!) A nice walkto start the day off right! Found myself some interesting new sites to explore and managed to snap some beautiful images, if I do say so myself!

On our journey today we went further along the hill than I have before, with the intention of heading down into the village and back along the beach. I don't think I could've picked a better moring for it! Although, someone should have warned my feet! They're still throbbing!

Whilst coming down from the Hills we passed an interesting little feature, coming from the top end, I stumbled my way towards some walls, of what looked like an old cottage

Curiosity got the better of me and I had a little nosey around to see what I could see, it's amazing how these old buildings remain standing sometimes hundreds of years since they were built, after taking a peak through the window I continued down the hill

After another 100 yards or so I noticed there were still some walls and structures covered by the brush, I thought it must've been a MASSIVE abode to continue for such a distance!

Slightly further down the hill I came across a sign revealing some interesting information. It turns out it wasn't one house after all, but a small village from the 1880s! There used to be an old Shale Mine there, and the village was made to house the workers. One census revealed there were 564 people crammed into the 95 cottages! Workers shared the houses in shifts, as the mine ran a 24hr operation. Eventually, a School and church were built for the local population.

Around 1893, the mine was shut, and the houses started to empty, there was a brief period when the site was used for Military operations during the First World War, then as Holiday homes for people from the surrounding cities, however, the site was formally closed in 1931 and the roof was removed to allow nature to recapture the site. A new Aliminum mine was created in the area which lead to many of the houses being removed altogether!

Definitely a site I want to revisit on another walk! Thanks for joining me for this Wednesday's walk! I look forward to catching some other walks from the awesome community this week!

Until next time, sloth and doggo out!
